Horse racing & greyhounds

Race cards supply a steady stream of legs for accumulators, and a non-runner or a Rule 4 deduction can change the return on a slip after it has been placed. The sport’s own terms therefore deserve a section apart.

Each-way means two bets, win and place, which doubles the total stake; the place terms differ from race to race and between operators, and the market quotation shows them. Starting price, ante-post and the handling of non-runners complete the vocabulary, whether the runners are horses or greyhounds.

For tax, General Betting Duty stays at 15% on remote bets on UK horse racing even after the general remote rate is set to reach 25% on 1 April 2027. Pool betting carries a Pool Betting Duty of its own, also 15%.
